How often should you redo your nails to keep them healthy?

Redoing your nails too soon can be costly and harm your natural nails, but waiting too long means they end up chipped, broken or overgrown and less tidy-looking. Each type of service has its own reasonable cycle.
1. Regular polish: 1-2 weeks
Regular nail polish tends to chip or scratch after about 1-2 weeks of use, especially with a lot of housework. You can repaint anytime it starts chipping without any effect on your natural nails.
2. Gel polish: 2-3 weeks
Gel bonds more firmly and holds color longer than regular polish, typically looking great for about 2-3 weeks depending on your activities. Remove gel properly (professional soak-off, no picking) and take a short break between applications to let nails recover, avoiding weak, yellowed nails over time.
3. Nail extensions / acrylic: 3-4 weeks
Extensions grow out with your natural nail, so after about 3-4 weeks the natural nail growth at the base becomes visible and needs a fill to keep the shape seamless. Leaving it too long can let moisture and bacteria build up at the seam, or weaken the natural nail when removed.
4. Dipping powder, cat-eye polish: similar to gel
Effect polishes (dipping powder, cat-eye/Flash) usually have a coating similar to gel, so the redo cycle is also about 2-3 weeks, depending on how much your hands are exposed to friction.
5. Signs you should redo sooner, regardless of the schedule
- Nails have lifted at the edge, letting water get underneath.
- Polish or gel has cracked or chipped in large sections.
- Natural nails show yellowing or unusual weakness — take a break to let them recover before your next service.
